Assistive Technologies, Inc. Announces the "Independence One", Interactive Speech Operated, Electronic Aid to Daily Living.
Naperville, Illinois, Oct.18, 2006 - The Independence One’s only interface to the user is a wireless microphone that allows interactive speech control of his/her environment.
Tim Ells, CEO, Don Dalton, President and Vincent LaBonte, Technical Director of Assistive Technologies, Inc., Naperville, Illinois, have collaborated to create this natural speech, interactive interface for those with severe disabilities using the powerful Nuance NaturallySpeaking speech recognition engine.
Independence One is the brainchild of Don Dalton. Don is a quadriplegic and says "for the past 38 years as a person with a disability, I believe that I am the best judge of what we need in a state-of-the-art ECU/EADL and I have designed just that product." Don is the 1995 Illinois State winner of the "Blue-Chip Enterprise Initiative Award" awarded by the United States Chamber of Commerce and others. He has also been featured in a 4000 word story on the front page of the Wall Street Journal.
The Independence One voice controls a variety of consumer devices anywhere in the home from anywhere within 800 feet of the home using a wireless headset worn by the user, such as, Television, Stereo, DVD players, VHS recorders, telephone, lights, appliances, fans, HVAC, bed, nurse call, drapes, doors, and many more. Independence One can control everything from anywhere in the world via the Internet. It can also be used to browse the Internet by voice. It uses the following protocols to provide this control, infrared and infrared routing, X10, RS-232, Insteon, UPB, and hardwire, and others.
Typical commands are spoken into a microphone that must be with an 800 feet of the Independence One controller and examples are as follows: User: "Computer", Independence One: "I'm listening", User: "Open the front door", Independence One: "The front door is open", User: "Start my car", Independence One: "Your car is started", or User: "Cable channel 550", Independence One: "Cable channel is set to 550."
